How to enjoy your family photo session day

From the first time we speak with you, we try to make your family photo shoot process a breeze. We know arranging your family photo session can feel overwhelming, so we make the scheduling process as simple as possible and make capturing your special family moments what it is supposed to be... fun!

Here are ways to reduce chaos on family photo day and ensure it is just another day at the park (or beach).

1) PICK THE RIGHT DATE/TIME: Schedule on a day and time that is good for your family. Every family is different. If you have little ones, we definitely want to schedule around nap times. If you have older kids, we want to schedule on a day free of activities or at least a day that isn't too booked. You'll need the time to get ready yourself and get the kiddos ready. So, between getting ready, travel time, and the session itself - plan for about twice as much time as you think you'll need to avoid a massive rush. Check the traffic several times before you leave just in case there are traffic delays. Anticipate having to leave earlier than expected.

"How am I going to choose outfits?"

2) WHAT TO WEAR: We are huge fans of preparation. Have your outfits ready and do a test drive at least 3 days before your session. This includes hair accessories, shoes, socks, shoes, jewelry, undergarments, shapewear - the whole shabang. This will prevent the last-minute crazies. Click here to view our helpful What to Wear Guide. We recommend avoiding stiff, uncomfortable clothes because this will show on your faces. We're more than happy to offer up our two cents if you have questions about your outfit choices. Have everything ironed and good to go the day before your session; and consider changing into your outfits at the location, if it is an option, to prevent wrinkles, spills, snags, etc. on the drive over. Another great tip - if you have young kiddos, put one of dad's old t-shirts over their outfit to protect from any car ride mishaps.

3) OTHER PREPARATIONS: Schedule hair cuts about a week before your session and wash your hair the day before so you have that great, easy to style 2nd day hair. If mani/pedis are your thing, make an appointment. Your hands will show in photos, and if you're wearing sandals or go barefoot - we'll see those toes too!

4) DISCUSS SHOT LIST: During your photo session consultation, we'll discuss what shots you'd like us to capture. If you need to think on it, we recommend sending the shot list via email or text. You can also send examples so we get a feel for the vibe you'd like us to capture. Just make sure you don't save this until the day before the session; and, as always, we're here if you need guidance. Also, no worries if you don't have ideas, we'll have plenty and if you like the work on our website and social media pages, you'll love the photos we capture.

"How do I get the kids and hubby excited about the photo session?"

5) GET EXCITED: When you talk to the kids about the photo session, make it sound fun. Let them know you are excited about getting pictures taken as well. You can even make a family day out of it and schedule a kid-friendly outing after your photo session. Get the kids involved by letting them choose their outfits (if they're too young, let them choose between 2 pair of shoes) or props you may want to include. Tell the young ones the photographer is a friend of yours to eliminate the fear of strangers.

6) GET HUBBY ON BOARD: The vast majority of the time moms are the ones that call to schedule a family photo shoot. Sometimes dads aren't so keen on the idea. So, share with him how important this is to you and involve him in the decision making. Acknowledge his efforts, and ensure him we will keep it light and make the session as painless as possible.

"What if my kids have a meltdown?"

7) EAT AND HYDRATE: It's so important to not arrive to your photo session hungry and/or thirsty. Eat before your session, but not directly before your session and keep the portion modest. This way you feel good and not over-stuffed and tired. Drink plenty water the day before and day of your session and bring water along to sip. This is very important on hotter days.

8) ARRIVE EARLY: Plan to arrive early to your session so you can decompress from the ride over, do a little stretching and chat a moment with your photographer.

9) YOU DO YOU: We strive to capture the unique essence of every family we photograph. So, be yourself. Also, perfection is the death of creativity. If you're interested in some amazing candid moments, we have to let go of "getting it just right". Your photographer will be capturing far more than you imagine.

Plan on at least 1 meltdown during sessions with littles ones. We have time, so let them have their moment - we'll focus on photographing mom and dad or the other kids in the meantime. We'll be suggesting poses, but feel free to give a little hug, kiss or snuggle. Expressing your love for one another makes for wonderful photos. Don't feel as though you always need to be posing, smiling, and looking at the camera. Relaxing and just enjoying the beautiful location is great!

10) FOCUS ON YOUR LOVE: Having the clothes, hair, etc. taken care of is great, but remember the most important thing is to enjoy this time with your family and celebrate the love you have for one another. Then, relax and have fun while we capture photos you'll treasure for many years to come -  Moments that Last a Lifetime.
