Be Your Own Family Photographer - Fill the Frame

We're going to start offering regular photography tips on our blog to help parents become their own family photographer. Photography is like anything else; the more you practice the better you get. It also helps to have tips to guide the way. Keep an eye on out Photo Classes Page for our 2020 Photography Class schedule.

When we're teaching photography, we notice many of our students tend to pull back and make the subject somewhat small in the frame. Sometimes, this is great for portrait photography. For example, when you want to include the beautiful surroundings or a park, beach or mountain scene. However, for emotionally impactful portraits a good tip is to fill the frame.

When you fill the frame with your subject(s) you're coming in close. We've found people shy away from this because they don't want to cut off the top of someone's head or part of their arm. We're not sure where this idea came from, but it is OK to come in close - you can compose a photo however you like. And when you do come in close, you capture an intimate moment. It's a great way to capture the connection between 2 people or the authentic emotion of 1 person. When you fill the frame your portraits have more impact.

Now it's time to practice! Get your camera out and fill that frame. You'll be surprised at the results. Have questions? Send us an email, we'll be more than happy to help.
