Engagement, Maternity, Family and Senior Pictures - Spring What to Wear Tips

One of the most common questions we get asked is, "What do we wear to our photo session?" We created a What to Wear Guide which is a helpful resource, and we also wanted to offer tips for what to wear specifically in the Spring.

Spring is a time of renewal - a perfect time of year for engagement, maternity, family and senior pictures. The weather is usually really nice, and everything is blooming and becoming green again. We recommend light layers just in case it is a bit chilly or windy on the day of your session. We also tend to move in and out of shaded areas at parks.

Overall, pastels are a great choice - think light yellow, pink, sherbert, light blue or green, lavender. Lighter colors look great at the park and the beach. Another great option is a light colored floral or plaid.

ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SESSION

When choosing outfits for 2 people in an engagement session, pick 3 or 4 colors as your palette and coordinate. Compliment each other but don't match. Maybe include one or more of your wedding colors in your outfit choices. Don't include too many prints. If one of you wears a shirt/dress with a print, the other should pick a solid shirt and pant with coordinating colors from that print.

MATERNITY PHOTO SESSION

For maternity pictures, mom-to-be should stand out. Choose the most color and/or a print for your outfit. Pastels and light neutrals look great at the park and the beach. Maxi dresses, dresses that tie at the waist, or long, flowing skirt with a bandeau bra or crop top are good options. Keep accessories minimal because we want to focus on you. Make sure you are comfortable in the outfit and are able to move around easily. Very important - wear comfortable shoes! We'll be walking around a bit to find the perfect backdrop for your maternity photos.

FAMILY PHOTO SESSION

Similar rules apply to family sessions. Pick 3 or 4 colors as your palette, but ensure you don't use too much of 1 color and try not to have 1 person wear a dominate color that is not worn by anyone else. Comfort is key in all types of sessions but maybe most importantly in family sessions with kids. If kids are uncomfortable or don't like their outfits, it may be more challenging to get those authenitic smiles.

SENIOR PHOTO SESSION

Your senior portrait session is a time to express your personal style. It may be appealing to choose the latest trend, but sticking with a more classic look will ensure you shine in your senior pictures. Added bonus: you'll be able to look back on them and smile for many years to come. Try to avoid clothing that is too tight or too loose. Stay away from clothing with logos or words.

These What to Wear Tips are hopefully helpful, and as always, we're here to guide you as you make your photo session outfit choices. Have questions? Click here to contact us about your session.
